Anthony D. Metcalfe is a biochemist and has a PhD in Molecular Genetics. His research has characterised wound healing, tissue regeneration and scar reduction, programmed cell death mechanisms in mammary gland biology and pre-implantation development, as well as engineering antibodies as a therapy for cancer.
Tony has worked in academia, industry and the not-for-profit sectors as a Professor and Director of Research & Target Biology at the Universities of Manchester, Brighton, St Mary’s Hospital, Manchester, Renovo Ltd, F-star Biotechnology Ltd and the Blond McIndoe Research Foundation. He has investigated techniques for creating novel skin substitutes, for delivering skin cells and stem cells, bi-specific antibodies for cancer therapies and scar reduction technologies from lab based studies through to Phase III clinical trials.
Tony’s research has been funded by numerous funding agencies, including the UK research councils (EPSRC, BBSRC, MRC), the Wellcome Trust, NIHR i4i, the Wolfson Foundation, the Freemason’s Grand Charity, the Robert Luff Foundation, Renovo Ltd, Genzyme and Merck Serono. Tony has published more than 60 full peer reviewed papers, four book chapters and has filed four patent applications. His work has been cited on more than 3000 occasions.
